Words for the Service

Lighting 4th Advent candle

Lord Jesus, Light of the world, blessed is Gabriel who brought good news;

blessed is Mary your mother and ours. Bless your Church preparing for Christmas;

and bless us your children who long for your coming.  Amen.

All: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Confession

You made us to be one family, yet we have divided humanity.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

You were born a Jew to reconcile all people, yet we have brought disharmony amongst races.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

You rejoice in our differences,

yet we make them a cause of enmity.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Absolution

May God who loved the world so much that he sent his Son to be our Saviour forgive us our sins and make us holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Collect: Advent 4

Eternal God, as Mary waited for the birth of your Son, so we wait for his coming in glory; bring us through the birth pangs of this present age to see, with her, our great salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Creed

We believe in one God, who is Creator, maker of all we see and all we don’t see.

Who is Ruler of the Universe: Source of all creation!

We believe in one God, who is Jesus Christ, God from God,

Light from Light, true God and true human.

He is one with the Creator;

the Word made flesh, our Messiah:

Saviour of all creation!

We believe in one God, who is Holy Spirit,

Breath of God moving among us;

Who is one with the Creator; one with the Christ;

our Comforter and our Guide: Mentor of all creation!

Amen

Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever,

Amen.

Lord Jesus, Light of light, you have come among us.
Help us who live by your light, to shine as lights in your world.
Glory to God in the highest.
Amen.

Our Lord says, ‘I am coming soon.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

May the Lord, when he comes, find us watching and waiting. Amen.

Blessing

We go into the world

All: To share God’s love and grow as God’s people

As we await our coming Saviour, let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.

Readings

2 Samuel 7:1-11

1 And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about,

2 that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Jehovah is with thee.

4 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Jehovah came unto Nathan, saying,

5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

6 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

7 In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

8 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Israel;

9 and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

11 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.

2 Samuel 7:6

6 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

Luke 1:26-38

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

28 And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee.

29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be.

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.

31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God.

36 And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren.

37 For no word from God shall be void of power.

38 And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
